| ADDIS ABABA, June 3 (NNN-ENA) -- St. Yared's Cross, which was kept by individuals for 18 years in France's capital Paris, returned to the Ethiopian Orthodox Church (EOC) on Wednesday.
The cross, which had belonged to the treasury of Tana Tcherqos church for centuries, was stolen at gun point in the early 90s, during the Derg regime.
Also on the occasion EOC inaugurated its first publication on the church's artistic heritage entitled "Ethiopian Church, Treasures and Faith".
Speaking at the occasion, Patriarch of the EOC Abune Paulos, said several heritages of Ethiopia are still found in various European countries.
All Ethiopians should strive to return the heritages to their country.
Abune Paulos, who is also President of World Council of Churches appreciated the efforts made by art historian and researcher at the French National Centre for Scientific Research, Jacques Mercier for the return of the heritage.
Regarding the book, he said it is aiming at presenting the guidelines of the Holy Synod for a policy for the conservation, preservation and promotion of the liturgical treasures of the Ethiopian Church.
Saint Yared is a major figure of the Ethiopian Church. He is celebrated for having codified liturgical chanting in the 6th century.
Ambassador of France to Ethiopia, Jean Christophe Bellard and other invited guests attended the event. -- NNN-ENA |
